Most of you know me as the crazy South African Au Pair who is usually on Snapchat on Wednesdays but let me re-introduce myself. My name is Gillian, I am from Johannesburg, South Africa and I am currently an Au Pair in Sunny California.
It breaks my heart to hear all these awful Au Pair stories and how Host Families treat their Au Pairs. I always say “I didn’t travel halfway across the world to be mistreated”. We are humans too not slaves and I think some Host Families don’t understand that. But then on the brighter side it makes my heart super happy to hear success stories of Au Pairs, such as myself, who have great experiences. I mean like we are here for a good time not a long time.
I feel like I have been blessed with the best host family ever. From the day I skyped with them till today, they have been the same people and they have treated me like part of the family. I can literally say that we haven’t had arguments since day one. We are opened with each other, if something is bothering anyone we talk about it over a glass of wine. And the reason why I think my experience has been so unforgettable this far is because from the get go I was honest with my family, I didn’t just choose my family because I wanted to leave ASAP or just because of the fact that they live in California (which is a bonus). No, I chose them because there was a connection, we share the same believes and they were loving and accepting of my crazy energy.
If I can share two secrets to choosing and landing with the right host family it will be:
1. Don’t choose a family because of the area they live in. They may live in a beautiful area but it doesn’t mean they are beautiful / good people.
2. BE SELFISH! And by saying that I don’t mean being a snob but you need to think about yourself first. You are giving up a year to two years of your life for your future host family. You must be able to enjoy it and make it count. Time is valuable and cannot be wasted.
By sharing this I am not bragging at all. I am giving hope, hope that there are success stories out there. That you can have the time of your life while staying true to yourself. Feel free to share your success story in the comment section or on our Snapchat (EYA_aupair).
